About ZyprexaZyprexa was introduced to the American market in 1996. Zyprexa is an "atypical" antipsychotic approved by the FDA for the long-term treatment of schizophrenia. It is manufactured by Eli Lily & Co. Its approved use has more recently been expanded to include the treatment of acute bipolar mania. One of the major claims made in the Zyprexa lawsuits is that Zyprexa causes metabolic disorders including diabetes, and diabetes related complications, at a significantly increased rate than most of the other pharmaceuticals in its class and that of "typical" antipsychotics. On March 1, 2004, at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, Lilly added a new warning to Zyprexa advising patients that Zyprexa has been linked to serious Zyprexa side effects including diabetes, hyperglycemia and other blood sugar disorders. Furthermore, amid growing concerns about the safety of widely prescribed atypical antipsychotics for "off-label" uses, on April 11, 2005, the FDA stated that it would require manufacturers of atypical antipsychotics including Zyprexa, to place black-box warnings, the agency's most severe, on the labels of all "atypicals" indicating that clinical studies was used to treat behavioral disorders in elderly patients with dementia revealed a higher death rate among the elderly when compared to patients receiving a placebo. The "target" Zyprexa side effects in the Zyprexa lawsuits are, generally, diabetes mellitus or significant exacerbation of diabetes, ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, diabetic coma, significant disability or surgery as a result of a metabolic disorder caused by Zyprexa and death caused by any of the foregoing.
