Zyprexa Side EffectsZyprexa side effects can commonly include headache, weight gain, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, agitation, as well as other effects. Patients who are considering or currently taking Zyprexa should speak to their health care provider to determine if the intended benefits of this medication outweigh serious side effects associated with use of Zyprexa. Since1996, numerous reports of the risk of serious Zyprexa side effects have been made by experts and other researchers across the globe. In 2001, Australian reports indicated over three hundred reports of Zyprexa side effects such as diabetes and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. In 2001 the American Medical Association published a letter from leading health care professionals about the risk of serious Zyprexa side effects. According to the letter, patients taking Zyprexa were ten times more likely to develop diabetes and related complications compared to the general population. After the Japanese and British governments received similar reports about the risk of Zyprexa side effects, they issued strong warnings and restricted the use of this medication. In 2002 a Duke University study also showed serious risk of Zyprexa side effects. They found nearly three hundred cases of Zyprexa treatment-emergent diabetes, most of which developed in patients who had been taking Zyprexa for less than six months. In addition to these serious Zyprexa side effects, the researchers also found one hundred cases of patients who had developed ketoacidosis as a result of Zyprexa use, twenty two cases of Zyprexa-related pancreatitis, and twenty three patients who died as a result of Zyprexa side effects. This prompted the FDA to finally take action and demand that Eli Lilly add a strong warning to all Zyprexa product information about the risk of these serious Zyprexa side effects. Eli Lilly complied, but has consistently maintained that the intended benefits of Zyprexa outweigh the risk of being injured by Zyprexa side effects. In 2004 even more Zyprexa side effects were indicated for patients taking this medication to treat Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Researchers found that elderly patients taking Zyprexa were twice as likely to suffer a serious stroke or fatal injury, compared to patients not exposed to Zyprexa. Eli Lilly again issued warning statements about the risk of these serious Zyprexa side effects, but has done nothing more to protect consumers. So far, the Zyprexa side effects leading to diabetes related death has taken the lives of 23 Zyprexa patients. There have been 288 reported cases of diabetes Zyprexa side effects. A consumer watchdog group, Public Citizen has been critical of the failure of the FDA to warn Zyprexa patients of potential Zyprexa side effects, including diabetes, hyperglycemia, and ketoacidosis.
